SANTA CRUZ RIGHT-TO-VOTE-ON-DESAL STAGES A PICTURE OPPORTUNITY ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 7

Santa Cruz Right to Vote on Desal in partnership with the Santa Cruz Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, Save The Waves Coalition, and Surfers’ Environmental Alliance staged a great picture opportunity on October 7 at 3:00 p.m at Mitchell Cove on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. Everyone was invited to attend and take part in the brief community event.

Participants set up the gig like a community project with surfboards scattered across the sand while "messages" were taped on. We were stoked to have a beautiful Sunday afternoon on the beach to pull this off.  Chapter photog Kelly Vander Kaay took excellent photos which we hope to "spread around" by whatever means possible. Other chapter vols in the mix included Sarah Mansergh, Reez Aikawa, Jenny Campbell, and Joan Littlefield.

Ken “Skindog” Collins, local big wave charger and Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve Surfing Ambassador, says “Santa Cruz does not need a Desal Plant right now. What Santa Cruz does need right now is the people of the community to step up, get involved, and protect the natural resources that we are truly blessed with, and want to continue to have for our children and generations beyond.”

Jim Littlefield, from Surfers’ Environmental Alliance, agrees: “SEA absolutely supports the right of Santa Cruz voters to ultimately decide whether or not to invest in such a massive construction plan when previous desalinization projects around our country have such a dismal success record.”

This event was colorful and media-friendly. We think this is classic “GRASS ROOTS DEMOCRACY” IN ACTION!
