The evening of November 1st, 2013, Sam George will be presenting the new Eddie Aikau biopic, Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau, at the famous Rio Theater in the heart of Santa Cruz, California. The screening is part of a surf conference being held the following day, November 2nd, at University of California, Santa Cruz, entitled "Salt of the Earth: Exploring the Cultural Diasporas of Surfing." The aim of the conference is to use the film as an entry point to discuss some of the most contentiously debated topics in contemporary surf culture, including: the changing aesthetic representations of surfing and how this reflects on the surf community; the changing technologies of surfboard production and whether or not the surfboard has a 'soul'; surf industry environmentalism and surfer activism; and contextualizing localisms in the locales of Oahu and Santa Cruz. Honoring Eddie's legacy of aloha, we will be celebrating the indigenous Hawaiian practice of he'e nalu, the impact it has had on the world, and thoughtfully examining the inevitable clash of cultures that has resulted.
