Successful Beach Cleanup at Rio Del Mar State Beach

Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz Hosts Successful Beach Cleanup at Rio Del Mar State Beach

Santa Cruz, CA – On Saturday, February 15, 2025, Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz hosted a successful beach cleanup at Rio Del Mar State Beach, bringing together 41 volunteers who helped remove 283 pounds of trash from the shoreline. The cleanup effort included everything from microplastics and cigarette butts to large debris such as couch cushions and 10 feet of plastic tubing.

“We are thrilled with the turnout and the effort of our volunteers,” said Darcie Connell, Volunteer Coordinator for Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz. “It’s inspiring to see so many people come together to make a tangible difference in protecting our beaches and ocean. We couldn’t have done this without their hard work and dedication.”

During the event, Surfrider connected with several individuals interested in supporting initiatives such as the Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) water quality testing program, the policy committee, and marketing efforts. We look forward to working with these passionate volunteers and others to further our mission.

“We are always looking for volunteers who are eager to get involved in our programs, from water testing to advocacy,” said Darcie Connell. “If you are interested in helping in any way, please reach out—we’d love to have your support.”

Additionally, Surfrider Foundation is currently seeking volunteers to lead future beach cleanups. Those interested in hosting or coordinating a cleanup event are encouraged to get in touch with the organization for more information.

Surfrider Foundation Santa Cruz continues to work towards preserving and protecting our coastal environment through community involvement and environmental stewardship.
