The Santa Cruz Chapter General Meeting will be Tuesday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the O'Neill Sea Odyssey Training Room at the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor. That's 2222 East Cliff Drive, in the O'Neill Building, on the beach and upstairs adjacent the Surfrider office and lab.
PLEASE, JOIN US FOR THIS LIVELY MEETING! WE'RE FOCUSING ON THE INCREASING AMOUNT OF USED DRUG SYRINGES AND OTHER HUMAN TRASH LEFT ON PUBLIC BEACHES, PUBLIC PARK AREAS, AND ALONG THE RAILROAD TRACKS. THIS ISSUE HAS BECOME A HOT ITEM IN SANTA CRUZ AND WE'D LIKE TO STIMULATE THE DISCUSSION AND GET SOME SOLID ACTIONS IN PLACE TO CONTROL THE PROBLEM. AS OF THIS WRITING, WE'RE STILL TACKING TOGETHER THE EVENT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK OUT, GET IN TOUCH.
WE ARE EXPECTING TO HAVE DAVID TERRAZAS,CITY OF SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL, AS A GUEST AND KEN "SKINDOG" COLLINS, SANTA CRUZ BIG WAVE CHARGER, SURFING AMBASSADOR FOR THE SANTA CRUZ WORLD SURFING RESERVE, AND COMMUNITY ACTIVIST
SURFRIDER HAS ATTENDED PUBLIC MEETINGS ON THIS SUBJECT, AND WE HAVE ALSO WRITTEN A LETTER TO THE CITY'S SAFETY COMMISSION URGING PUBLIC ACTION AND ADVOCATING FOR A COMMUNITY RESPONSE.
THE SANTA CRUZ WORLD SURFING RESERVE HAS ALSO COMMENTED, POSTING A LETTER TO SANTA CRUZ CITY COUNCIL EXPRESSING STRONG CONCERNS AND ADVOCATING FOR A COMMUNITY SOLUTION.
INCREASED INTEREST IN THIS ISSUE MAKES US CONFIDENT THAT A LASTING COMMUNITY SOLUTION WILL SOON BE ESTABLISHED. WE THANK EVERYONE FOR THEIR INTEREST IN THIS MATTER AND FOR THEIR DESIRE TO CLEAN IT UP AND DISCOURAGE REPETITION. SEVERAL COMMUNITY GROUPS HAVE FORMED OR ARE FORMING TO CLEANUP VARIOUS "HOT SPOTS" AROUND THE CITY, SO WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT A MORE PERMANENT APPROACH TO THIS ISSUE CAN BE ARRANGED.
