Story by Amber Jones -- I went for a morning kayak with my daughter and friends of ours. We had a wonderful kayak out of the Santa Cruz Harbor to Seal Rock and back. On our way back in the harbor, we came across a seagull that proceeded to follow us as we kayaked passed him. This isn't typical behavior for a seagull, so we turned around to get a closer look.
We realized the seagull was badly entangled in fishing line around both of it's wings and so the rescue to save him began. It was a team effort of all involved that made the rescue of the seagull possible. I was so proud of the kids for taking great care and interest in helping to ensure the seagull was safely captured and saved. It's heartbreaking to see an animal hurting and injured from something that came from people. I'm thankful for those that take an active roll in helping to rescue and care for the animals that are injured. I'm also thankful to those that are cautious not to create marine debris and to those who take an active roll in cleaning our beaches, roads, and waterways from debris that they see, which helps prevent things like this from happening.
