We’re excited to invite you to a very special Surfrider Santa Cruz Chapter Meeting featuring renowned wildlife photographer and researcher Jodi Frediani. For decades, Jodi has been documenting the whales, dolphins, and marine life of Monterey Bay and beyond, capturing unforgettable moments that bring us closer to the wild world just offshore.
Through her breathtaking photography and storytelling, Jodi will guide us into the lives of these extraordinary animals—revealing their behaviors, their challenges, and their resilience. From breaching humpbacks to playful dolphins, her images illuminate why protecting Monterey Bay’s delicate ecosystem is so vital.
This evening isn’t just about beautiful photographs—it’s about connection. Jodi will share behind-the-scenes stories from her countless hours on the water, offer fascinating facts about the species that call our coastline home, and highlight the conservation efforts needed to ensure their survival.
Attendees will also get a chance to hear about her latest book, Wild Monterey Bay, which brings together her finest work and deep passion for ocean wildlife. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

About Jodi Frediani
Santa Cruz-based and internationally recognized, Jodi Frediani is an award-winning photographer and whale researcher whose work has taken her around the world. She has been swimming with and photographing humpback whales on the Silver Bank off the coast of the Dominican Republic for over 20 years, while also photographing the marine life of Monterey Bay for the past fifteen.
Her photographic adventures extend far beyond California, with journeys to Africa, Alaska, Argentina, Antarctica, Brazil, Franz Josef Land, Mongolia, Norway, Siberia, Svalbard, Thailand, and Tonga. Jodi’s photography has appeared in numerous national and international publications, including the BBC’s Nature’s Weirdest Events and Carl Safina’s National Geographic blog, Ocean Views.
In addition to her photography, Jodi is engaged in whale research through several fluke ID projects worldwide. In 2020, she co-authored her first scientific paper, Postmortem Attractions: Humpback Whales Investigate the Carcass of a Killer Whale-Depredated Gray Whale Calf. Since 2021, she has been part of the WhaleSETI team conducting field research in southeast Alaska on humpback whale playback studies, co-authoring recent papers on whale communication and behavior.
Her anthology, Wild Monterey Bay, is a storytelling project featuring people’s most memorable wildlife encounters, beautifully illustrated with her photography.
