One of the biggest strengths of the Surfrider Foundation is you, our volunteers and members. As a grassroots organization, Surfrider is made up of individuals that want to make a difference for the environment. Our education program focuses on how all of us can be the positive change that our oceans so desperately need.
Protecting our coasts starts with understanding it.
Many of the challenges facing our coastline, from climate change and sea level rise to ecosystem health and water quality, are grounded in science. Yet these conversations often stay within academic or professional circles, creating a gap between the people doing the research and the communities most impacted by it.
Our Education Program bridges that gap.
Through free, quarterly public presentations, we invite local scientists and researchers to share their work in an accessible, engaging way. These talks are designed for curious community members—no science background required—and are open to both Surfrider members and the general public.
Topics vary based on local issues and speaker expertise, and may include coastal erosion, climate impacts, marine and bird ecology, water quality, and other Central Coast environmental challenges. Speakers come from respected local institutions such as UC Santa Cruz, Point Blue, USGS, CSU Monterey Bay, San José State University, and more.
By creating space for meaningful dialogue between scientists and the community, this program deepens understanding, builds connection, and empowers people to take informed action to protect our coast.
