Ban The Butt Santa Cruz

On Tuesday June 24th 2025, Santa Cruz City Council held its second and final reading of the ordinance behind the Ban the Butt campaign, which seeks to ban the retail sale of filtered tobacco products. Council members unanimously voted for the ordinance, making its passage official.  Big thanks to The Cigarette Surfboard, Save Our Shores, and many others for helping with this victory. Cigarette butts are the top items found at Surfrider beach cleanups and we need to stop this litter at the source. A ban on the retail sales of tobacco products with a butt or plastic tip would help solve the problem.

We are encouraging all five Santa Cruz County cities to pass a Ban The Butt ordinace similar to what the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors passed in October 2024.
